100 Things #18: Danny Phantom

100 of My Fandoms
18. Danny Phantom

I remember exactly when I first got into Danny Phantom, which may or may not have had something to do with the fact that it was the night of the show's premiere. As a fan of both Fairly Oddparents and ghosts, I had been super psyched for this new show, which was like both of those things combined, for weeks beforehand. I specifically remember marking the date and time of the premiere in my sixth grade planner, and that my parents and I had a thing to do that night and I made absolutely sure we'd get home in time for me to watch. This was a big deal for me is what I am saying.

So after all that, did Danny Phantom live up to my expectations? Well, obviously it did to some extent, or else I wouldn't be posting about it. :P The truth is, it was really not the best show in the world. You know how in all of these posts I always talk about how what I love the most in my fandoms is the characters? Yeah, put that aside for this one, because most of the characters are not incredibly likable people. And the plot was okay, but as I recall both it and character development (such as it was) started to completely fall apart come season 3. The writing is perhaps best left unmentioned. So honestly, what really kept this show going for me was the concept and the world. I'm a huge fan of ghosts, mainly because they can lead to possession, so I was pleased to note that that particular aspect of ghostness was introduced as early as episode 2. :D (Even if they did insist on calling it "overshadowing". What, is "possession" too demonic-sounding, Mr. Hartman?) (also why did they take such pains to sidestep the words "kill" and "die" when it's a show ABOUT GHOSTS, but that's a different matter.) But I also enjoyed seeing all the other ghost powers explored, and how they kept coming up with new gimmicks for different people to have. Basically, ghosts. Ghosts okay.

Also, I do have Danny Phantom to thank for finally giving me a go-to answer to the ubiquitous "what would your superpower be if you could have a superpower?" question. Because not only would having ghost powers be super cool, it would be like having four other powers combined. Invisibility, intangibility, flight, and possession. Kind of a no-brainer for me, really. c:

Hottest guy: I think this one might be threefold.
- If you'd asked me who my DP dude was back in sixth grade, I would have said Danny himself, and today I can absolutely not figure out why. I guess he was kind of cute, but he certainly didn't have the looks I'd expect from dudes I like. But! If we were to be talking about laid-back mullet-head human Danny from "Identity Crisis"? Heck yes I would still be all over that. Dang.
- By contrast, my thing for Poindexter still makes sense. I don't know what it is about the '50s that produces such endearingly cute fictional nerds (see also: BttF). And while I guess he's nominally a member of the DP rogues gallery, he is really not a villain. His only problems are an overdeveloped sense of justice and a tendency not to hear people out. Also, he's clearly into possession. Can't go wrong with that.
- Last but not least, Johnny. Oh man, Johnny. That hair. That scruff. Those freckles. ♥ (At least, I think they're freckles. Could be acne. :|a) He's also a pretty decent dude himself, and you can't help but love his serious devotion to his girl. I'd totally be willing to forgive his wandering eye once in a while. :B
wow i apparently have too many feels about danny phantom dudes.

OTP: Danny/Valerie forever! And I have Tyma to thank for making me ship it. :D See, Danny/Sam is exactly the type of pairing I can't stand (might be the poster child for that type of pairing, actually), and I was entertaining the idea of Danny/Paulina but couldn't find too much chemistry there. Then Tyma was like hey man you should ship Danny/Val like I do and I was like DUDE. DUDE YES. And I did. c:
I suppose, given the whole true fan/anti-fan controversy, I should probably mention slash here at some point, but I don't actually think I ship any DP slash. This was riiight when I was starting to realize slash was a thing, and certainly before I came into possession of my pair of slash goggles. It doesn't help that the first DP slash pairing I came across was Danny/Dash. I still don't get that pairing. :| I will say that I read a pretty good Danny/Vlad time travel fic once, if that counts.

DP-related life's goal: Write a novelization of "Splitting Images".
