Mostly a Connecticon report!
I decided to try and come up with human names the ponies would have if they were humans and not ponies.
Twilight Sparkle: Twila Sparks (easy)
Rainbow Dash: Rain/Raine/Rainbow(? parents must have been hippies) Dashell
Pinkie Pie: Wilhelmina Diane Pine (still goes by Pinkie, because she has pink hair and likes pink and, I mean, Wilhelmina)
Applejack: Jacklyn (aka Jackie, Jack) Apple (Applebaum? Appleton? Applesomething?) Her siblings stay Macintosh and Bloom, of course.
I do not know about Rarity and Fluttershy, though in the latter's case I think her last name should be Cheyenne or something. Maybe she is part Albanian and her first name is Flutura. :|a (Thanks, behindthename!) Okay, maybe I just don't know about Rarity.
Oh, also I went to Connecticon this weekend. Quick con report maybe?
Friday:
Left about 8 AM, got there about 10. I stupidly dropped a bag on my (Styrofoam) wrench while getting out of the car and broke it, so I was panicking about that for a while. Fortunately, Yuki's mom helped me stay calm and bought some superglue and helped me glue it together. Thank you, Yuki's mom.
By the time that was done and I had changed into the rest of my costume, etc., it was like 11, so we stopped by the Artists' Alley until Wheel of Fortune was supposed to start (there were not many panels that looked interesting, a recurring theme). I had been all pumped to get some commissions and stuff, but there were really not that many good artists there, unlike at, say, Anime Boston. I did buy a couple things but then I went back to the room to eat lunch and get my wrench before Wheel of Fortune.
Wheel of Fortune was pretty good, and if I had been chosen I might even have won. :B My wrench broke again during it, but I had seen that some people in the Artists' Alley were doing repairs, so I stopped by there afterwards and they hot-glued it - for free, even! - and it stayed together the entire con. I tipped them at the time, but I should have gone back and tipped them some more yesterday as a thank-you. :( Oh well.
After that I think we stopped by the Dealers' Room or something, but I wanted to wait until Sunday to actually buy anything, because sales. This was when I ran into a group of Baccano! cosplayers (Isaac, Miria, Nice and Chane) and we all spazzed together and I got a picture with them, and immediately after that I ran into another group of Baccano! cosplayers (Jacuzzi and Nice) and we got a picture with some of the preceding group and spazzed some more. :B
Anyway, it was either then or after the next panel, which was the Cyanide and Happiness panel. That one was okay; it was two of the guys and they talked about the comic. After that I went to the improv show and Yuki went off to do something else. The improv was hilarious, as improv is wont to be. One particularly spectacular game, entitled "Inventory", had some of the members trying to guess through charades items suggested by members of the audience, which turned out to be: a mace the size of your head; a broken Slip 'n Slide as small as a dynamite rabbit and powered by pie; and a cuttlefish made of adamantium with a picture of Gaddafi (you can imagine how long it took them to successfully mime "Gaddafi"). Also, when some girls in the back were yelling out "Cuttlefish!" as an answer to everything, the presenter said, "You guys are really excited." Homestuck fans will get it.
After that I found Yuki again at some point and we watched the FMV contest, which is like AMVs but not just with anime. Most of 'em were pretty lackluster but there were some really good ones, my personal favorite being an Ouran/One Piece one to The Lonely Island's "Jack Sparrow". So that was good. Then we watched the Galaxy Express 999 movie because it was showing, even though we came in halfway through and so I was even more confused than I normally would be. And after that was the Visual Novels and Eroge panel, which would probably have been more interesting for me if I played visual novels, but I still got to make fun of Clannad, squee over Katawa Shoujo (Rin's the girl for me~), and badger Yuki into downloading something called Swan Song so we can play it. It looked really cool. So that was Friday and then we went to sleep.
Saturday:
Woke up early because Yuki wanted to go to Ryuoendo's Let's Playing 101 panel. It was kind of interesting even though I do not know much about Let's Plays. Apparently about 80 percent of it is picking a memorable username. Who knew? After that was Jeopardy, which was not as good as real Jeopardy, but the host was Ganondorf and there was an amusing running gag where Link kept coming in and Ganondorf kept sending him off on silly errands before he could fight him. Also one of the contestants was an excellent Harley Quinn.
After that there was not much for a while. I went to Storytelling: Medium is the Message while Yuki went off to the Gurren Lagann movie and Lovecraft panel. We met up again for the Romance Anime panel which I do not remember much about. Then we split up again so I could see the hypnotist, which was very funny. Someday I will try to be hypnotized at one of those things. If any of you are reading this, have you ever been hypnotized? How was it? :o
Afterwards we caught most of Insane Creators, who seemed quite insane, and then there was not much to do so we passed time until What You Can't See Won't Hurt You, where some voice actors talked about life behind the scenes. That turned out not to be that interesting and also it was interrupted by fireworks halfway through, so we took the opportunity to leave. The last panel of the night was Craziest Mecha Moments, which was humorous but quite long and I was pretty much fallling asleep by the end of it. So after that we went to sleep.
Sunday:
Sunday morning we didn't have anything to do until Cosplay Chess at 12, so after packing we decided to hit the Dealers' Room to look for aforementioned sales. Luckily we got out there pretty early, because as it turned out it was heck getting an elevator. Everyone was trying to get out of there with their stuff, so every elevator that stopped at our floor (when we could get one that stopped at our floor) was absolutely packed. We ended up waiting like 10 minutes for one, and I actually had too much tuff to take in one trip so I had to get an elevator back up and do the whole thing again. x_x
Eventually we got our bags put away and checked out with some time to spare, so we finally made it to the Dealers' Room. I bought a couple things, which I detail below, but not too many because I began to run out of money. Then we went to Cosplay Chess, which had quite a few sweet cosplayers, including: Olimar and an army of Pikmin (all separate cosplayers); an Oompa Loompa; Hulk Hogan; and Grell and Madame Red as one side's king and queen (Grell was the king, unfortunately) flanked by bishops Harley and Deadpool in an excellent red/black/white theme. However, the match was far too quick and ended about an hour early, so to kill time we went to the Japanese Steampunk panel. It was actually much more interesting than I'd expected. I'm not much of a steampunk person, but it was really cool to see these people getting so passionate about it. Kind of warmed my heart, somehow.
After that we finally left and I was sad on the way home, but other than that I had a really great time. It was an awesome weekend and a sweet convention and I would not mind going back there. :D
Other bits:
Costume status: Pretty good! The main problem was that the coveralls were too big for me and hard to walk in, and also the pins kept coming undone. I may try to sew it for future conventions. But otherwise, it was not too warm, the wig was perfect, the shoes were comfortable, and it was baggy enough that I didn't actually need to bind (wish I'd known that before the first day). Would totally wear again.
Recognitions: 6, not counting that one Baccano! group. One person said I made their day. :D Another was a Firo who'd worn his cosplay because he heard there would be a few Baccanneers at the con, but apparently I was the first he'd seen. We had people take our picture together. c: (yes Graham and Firo never meet in canon shut up)
Hugs: 3 - two within minutes of each other. c:
Other people with giant wrenches: 2:
- Steampunk guy with an actual real giant wrench. I commented that mine was bigger. He invited me to hold his, at which point I added hastily that I didn't say it was heavier.
- Engineer from TF2. I leveled my wrench at her, at which point she ran over, tapped our wrenches together, exclaimed "Wrench powers, activate! Form of... Engineer!" and ran back.
Best purchase: Baccano! box set
Most ill-advised purchase: Rubber duck of Grell ($25 - and what the heck am I going to do with it?)
Other loot:
- Small clay Nyaromon
- Kamina keychain (to replace my broken one)
- Orihime hairpins
- Print of Yoko
- Genkaku Picasso, volume 1
- Commissions: gijinka Infernape and Staraptor, OC, me (in costume) as a pony
Stuff I did not buy, but wanted to:
- Plastic model kit of the Chikorita line (I really should have, it was cheaper than what Amazon's got)
- Grell shirt (they didn't have any in my size and it was the kind where the sleeves are too short anyway, but... Grell shirt ;_;)
- Merry/Frodo doujinshi (it was $34... but I was sorely tempted)
...And, yeah, that was in fact really long actually, but that's about it. So yes. I had fun. :D And if there was anything I forgot I'll mention it in a later post.
Also I will skip the Digimon meme this post, sorry. This is never going to get posted otherwise. Next time, y'all.
