Okay, so I haven't posted since mid-July. Is there a reason for this? Well, sort of. I got caught up in work for my internship, and when I was done working for the day I was generally too burnt out to make a post. And when I wasn't I was probably playing Pokémon Conquest or something. :P And about a week after that ended, I left for Japan. So here I am, about a month into Japan and finally feeling like I have things together somewhat, so I decided maybe I ought to post! Besides, LJ has once again decided it would be a good idea to make a completely unnecessary and unwanted change, this time to the posting page, so I should enjoy this one that actually works while I can. :B

So I guess I'll just post some things from my life I've been thinking about. Starting with stuff about Japan.

Stuff about Japan! )

I think that is it about Japan, but let me know if you guys have any questions, or if you want me to get you anything! I will do it. I will get you things. You may have to pay for them depending on the price though. :P

And now on to some fandomy stuff!

new best fandom = Kokoro Connect )

And a dream I had (+new weird crush!) )

my life everyone. Well I think that is quite enough for one post! Don't worry, though; for anyone who's been waiting with bated breath for my next 100 things post, I'll try to get it up soon. C: (that's what he said)

EDIT: Wow I almost forgot. You guys remember the dakimakura case I mentioned commissioning from [livejournal.com profile] soltian a few months ago? Well, here's the finished product! Yes, it's Valmont. Did you guys expect anything else from me. c: Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh it's perfect though and I'm really sad I'm in Japan and not at home where I can hug my new dakimakura. I urge you guys to commission your own ones when she opens commissions up again next month or so! Because seriously. ♥

I know I don't need to apologize for the unexplained week-long breaks from 100 things posting, but I'm sorry anyway. I've had finals for the past week or so, and then the past two days I couldn't get myself back into the swing of writing the next one. Hopefully I'll be motivated enough to get it up tonight (that's what she said), but in the meantime, have this post as a short breather. :B Also, this is a good opportunity to say hi to [livejournal.com profile] captainporridge, fellow Ladd/Claire shipper and also a cool person, from the regrettably tiny Baccano! friending meme. Hey there, Cap! :B

While I'm here, a brief update on two new fandom things, which both start with A and as such are regrettably ineligible for retroactive addition to my 100 things. The first is Assassins, which Yuki and I got the chance to see a production of on Thursday. Yes, okay, we'd both been huge fans of the songs already, but this was the first time either of us had seen it performed and it was awesome and amazing and nearly-perfect, hnnnng. The only actors I had a problem with were the Balladeer/Oswald and (partially) Zangara. Everyone else was excellent; major props to Booth, Guiteau and the Proprietor especially. And I now feel qualified to consider it a fandom because of all the shipping I came out of it doing. I realize I am probably going to Hell for all this, but dang it, there was so much touching among them! And I am a sucker for crossover pairings, and even though they all appear in the same work they are from different parts of history and never met so it counts. Booth/Oswald OTP man. ;___; Still, this is the only thing I can think of where I actually feel uncomfortable shipping from it. Doesn't stop me, obviously, but still. Thanks, Mr. Sondheim. I think.

Okay yes I said there were two things. The second is Avengers, which I saw with my dad today. Not going to say too much about this one because spoilers, but it was definitely an awesome movie. Perfect dialogue (Joss Whedon ilu ♥), action scenes that actually drew me in (I'm normally pretty indifferent on them), and Loki being a serious cutie. That hair, unf. Ships in that one were Tony/Bruce and Thor/Loki (it is okay because gods are all up ons the whole incest thing). HG also suggested Steve/Thor, ship name: Captain Hammer. I'm down. c:

Okay, that is basically all I have to talk about now because my life is boring. But in case I do not write the next 100 things post tonight, or even if I do, I leave you with this meme that I stole from [livejournal.com profile] mireia_antonina: Give me a fandom/pairing/character... ) Go for it. :D
vethica: (Default)
So, I'm still trying to get back into the hang of this "posting regularly" thing. I'm not quite sure I've mastered it yet, but hey, anything more than one post every 3 months is progress for me. :B I was actually going to post yesterday as well, but I wasn't feeling so good and also I had to work on my final for my Fairy Tales and Gender class (a retelling of The Snow Queen with lesbians, woooo). But I am done with that now (the draft, anyway), and also I'm planning to start something that will hopefully get me posting a lot more from now on! But before I can tell you that story, I have to tell you this story.

this story is the Anime Boston con report btw )

Wow that was horrendously long. Kudos to you if you read all of it. Anyway, here is that thing I was talking about that will hopefully revolutionize my posting habits (i.e., make them existent)! :D

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

I know I don't normally do stuff like this, but I saw [livejournal.com profile] burningqueen doing it and I was inspired. :D My topic is going to be 100 of my fandoms. It would probably sound better as something like "100 fandoms I am or have been in", but I never really leave a fandom, just kind of drift away from it for a while (which is what led me to think of the topic in the first place). I'm going to be posting them in alphabetical order, and I wanted to get the first one up tonight, but we'll see how much energy I have after writing this big long post. But if this works out, prepare yourselves for a whole lot more entries from me. I think you're going to like them. c:
vethica: (Default)
They don't tell you how hard it is to get back into posting on Livejournal after month-long hiatuses (hiatūs?). They should, but they don't. And the fact that I have things like Tumblr, Gaia, Lang-8, Sims, and, of course, schoolwork to take my mind away from it doesn't help matters.

If it makes you feel any better, my life hasn't been all that interesting. I've been in school, studying basically the same things I was studying last year. I'm now a linguistics minor in addition to a Japanese major, so there's that. Also, there is the fact that I will be studying abroad in Japan next year. Which, ngl, is pretty awesome. :D

I haven't really gotten into any new fandoms either. Except ASoIaF/Game of Thrones and Gankutsuou, which both happened this summer... yeesh, it's been that long. (e: OH WAIT I FORGOT LYCHEE LIGHT CLUB wow I suck. Yeah, Lychee Light Club too. Also that reminds me to say hello to my new f!s friending meme friends [livejournal.com profile] astrokittie and [livejournal.com profile] tasogare_n_hime. Hi! c:) I haven't left any of my old fandoms either, and I just got bit bad by the Baccano! bug so if I start posting regularly on here again it will probably involve a lot of squeeing about that show. Just like old times. :D

Which I suppose is as good a segue as any. I'd originally planned to make a post a couple weeks ago to tell y'all to go vote in [livejournal.com profile] animetournament, but then I never did and by now we're down to the top 12 and my boy Jacuzzi got knocked out of the running so it's a bit late to make any exhortations to that effect. You can still vote though if you want to. :B No, the main reason for my post right now is this: who all is going to Anime Boston? Because I know some of you live around here or at least make it here for cons, and let's face it, we need to meet up. The really cool thing is I'll be cohosting a panel this year ("How Is This Con Different From All Other Cons? An Otaku Passover"), so if you want to stop by and say hi, I will be the one up there who doesn't have facial hair. Or if you just see me around the con, I'll probably be cosplaying Graham Specter all three days, and if you don't know who that is, look for the giant wrench. :B

So there is that, and also, I guess, what is going on in your lives even if you are not going to AB. I HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO END LJ POSTS
vethica: (Default)
So it's been a long time since I posted. I'm not going to count exactly how long right now since that will just make me depressed, but I know it's been over a month. I kept having these things I wanted to talk about, and there kept being more building up and then I just... didn't. You know how it is, I think. :( Haven't been commenting much either, though I've been a little better about that. So yes, I am not dead. I do not think anyone was worried that I was but you never know.

What I have been doing during this time is being in California for eight days, the Berkshires for six and Florida for five (not all of these were at once). Just got back from the last today. It was a lot of fun except for when I got sick a few days ago. I am still sick now, so, that is not great. But I had a lot of fun seeing my extended family and everything. Just hope I didn't give them my cold.

Haven't been doing much else apart from that. Playing Sims 3, mostly. I have a decent legacy going and everything. I may picspam you guys with it later. :B I did not get the latest job I applied for, surprising no one, and I think it is too late to learn to drive, so my chances of accomplishing anything this summer are pretty well down there. I did, however, have an idea for what I can do next summer, jobwise, that I thought was a pretty good one: I can learn stenography. I bet I would be pretty good at picking it up, and if I can do that and bring up my typing speed 5 more wpm or so, I might be able to break into the closed-captioning field. And if I get good enough at that, I might be able to eventually get a job subbing things. :D Fansubbing would also be a good place to start with that one. But, um, let's give my Japanese another couple years, shall we.

More miscellany:
- Saw the perfect production of As You Like It over at Shakespeare and Company, and a few days later, entirely by chance, wound up with front-row seats to the opening night of the Williamstown Theater Festival's production of She Stoops To Conquer. I had not read the latter, but it was very funny and had a great cast. I suspect it would come across as pretty dry if you just read the play, so if you can, you should see a good production of it like that one. :D
- Some bitterness toward the recent Homestuck updates, but this post is long enough as is so I guess I'll discuss that later.
- Click for the rest, as this got long. You should read them as there are recs and cool things and stuff! )

Maybe if I take the Digimon meme a couple answers at a time I can finish in the next three weeks. At least these two are fun ones. :D

Day 17: Best dressed character. )

Day 18: Worst dressed character. )

Oh my god those got rambly. I'm so sorry.

Now, since I've been somehow inspired again, I'm off to try and write some of that ridiculous Ladd/Claire I've had banging around in my head for a couple months. Wish me luck~
vethica: (Default)
I decided to try and come up with human names the ponies would have if they were humans and not ponies.

Twilight Sparkle: Twila Sparks (easy)
Rainbow Dash: Rain/Raine/Rainbow(? parents must have been hippies) Dashell
Pinkie Pie: Wilhelmina Diane Pine (still goes by Pinkie, because she has pink hair and likes pink and, I mean, Wilhelmina)
Applejack: Jacklyn (aka Jackie, Jack) Apple (Applebaum? Appleton? Applesomething?) Her siblings stay Macintosh and Bloom, of course.
I do not know about Rarity and Fluttershy, though in the latter's case I think her last name should be Cheyenne or something. Maybe she is part Albanian and her first name is Flutura. :|a (Thanks, behindthename!) Okay, maybe I just don't know about Rarity.

Oh, also I went to Connecticon this weekend. Quick con report maybe?

Quick con report maybe! (not actually that quick) (really long actually) )

...And, yeah, that was in fact really long actually, but that's about it. So yes. I had fun. :D And if there was anything I forgot I'll mention it in a later post.

Also I will skip the Digimon meme this post, sorry. This is never going to get posted otherwise. Next time, y'all.

So in an awesome stroke of coincidence, my Graham wig and coveralls both arrived yesterday! This is especially awesome because the wig was being shipped from Hong Kong and wasn't scheduled to get here until tomorrow at the earliest (and the Wednesday after the con at the latest). Now I'm really glad I didn't pay for that expedited shipping. :P So now all I have to do is finish the wrench, pin the coveralls (which are way too big), and find some boots. And Connecticon is only 10 days from now! I'm excited. :D

Also, Wandering Son has supposedly finally shipped! Which... is a pretty big deal, considering I'd been waiting for it for almost six months. :| Of course, I can't celebrate just yet, seeing as I was an idiot and accidentally had it shipped to my school address instead of my home one. Luckily, I can pick it up when we're in the area this summer, but still, that was pretty dumb. Even for me. (In my defense, would you have expected it to actually ship before the end of the summer?)

On another note, Genkaku Picasso is an amazing manga. I've just finished the series (only 3 volumes!) and oh man, so good. In one chapter a yaoi fangirl learns that it's totally okay to be a yaoi fangirl, as long as you don't let your fantasies get in the way of your real life (and spoilers for the chapter )). More significantly, in another chapter there's a trans character who is judged at first, but once her classmates learn about her situation, they're totally okay with her and don't have a problem referring to her by her preferred name and gender from then on. Maybe that's on the unrealistic side, but it's always nice to see nuanced trans characters in Japanese media, and also it's really sweet. Heck, the whole series is sweet like that; it's one of those heartwarming weird-outsider-kid-ends-up-gathering-a-bunch-of-friends-who-accept-and-like-them affairs that I'm a sucker for (see: Kimi ni Todoke, 7 Billion Needles). Heartwarming wrapped up in occasional disturbing, true, but with Usamaru Furuya, really, what can you expect. :P BASICALLY YOU GUYS SHOULD READ IT okay.

I've also been playing a lot of Sims 3 lately - or at least trying to, since it turns my computer into a slow piece of crap half the time. Finally started a legacy, which is something I've been wanting to do since forever. At some point I'll have to install a mod so I can get more than 8 people in the house, which... I have no idea how to do and am somewhat worried about. @_@ But my founder and his girlfriend only just got married, so I figure there's time yet.

Now I'm going to knock out a couple days on this meme, since at the rate I've been posting I'll be lucky to finish this before school starts again. x_x No picspams today, sorry, considering the nature of the questions.

Day 12: Least favourite digital monster. )

Day 13: Least favourite character. )

Day 14: Least favourite season. )

Oh, also I have a job interview on Thursday, which is pretty cool. I doubt I'll get in, but I will try~!
vethica: (Default)
First, a plug: [livejournal.com profile] tehseto, who is an awesome icon maker, is taking requests again! So if you have an image that you want an icon made of, now is the time. :D You have to be watching her account to request one, but if you don't want to do that, you can give me the image and I'll put in the request. But you should definitely not miss this opportunity. :B

Next... um. Ordered a wig today. Looks like I'm going through with that whole cosplaying Graham thing... if it gets here in time, that is. :|a Apart from that and buying the other costume parts I need, the hardest part will be making the wrench. I've found a cosplay.com thread from someone with the same problem, and hopefully I'll be able to follow the advice they were given. For some reason I really want to do this cosplay. I just hope I can pull it off. D:

Also, was watching the Tonys last night, saw Mackenzie Crook, squeed like it was four years ago. Guess I'm not entirely over that crush. :| (He's still cute though. Geez, Mr. Crook, stop doing that.)

Day 11: Who do you think wore the goggles best? (WARNING: a few images) )
vethica: (Default)
I continue to be obsessed with Baccano!, surprising no one. Tried to look for merchandise the other day, found very little (except the CD, but that costs about 40 dollars, and the DS game, but I'll need a couple more years of Japanese before I can understand it). And it was unpopular enough in Japan that there are basically no doujinshi for it. Woe. Perhaps I can commission some fanart the next con I go to or something.

(...Speaking of the next con I go to. I may possibly have a sudden urge to cosplay Graham Specter for Connecticon. And may have already located all the pieces I need online. Someone please convince me this is a bad idea. Good lord, sir, you don't even like him!)

Have also been watching more of Madoka. It's about as great as everyone says it is. Very depressing, though. Poor... well, everyone, but right now Sayaka especially. ;_;

Day 10: Favourite season. (WARNING: slight heaviness of image) )

[Error: unknown template qotd]
Kirk. Get all the babes. And the Spocks.

So, what I was saying last time about the pictures. Y'all know how I've often despaired about Danbooru's almost exclusively catering towards the male gaze? Friends, meet Bishibooru! You will never go hungry (for pictures of hot guys or hot guys making out with other hot guys) again. :B That's where I got some of the Taito pictures from last post, and also a good chunk of the stuff in my Ladd/Claire folder (which I've updated since then, so [livejournal.com profile] theditz even if you checked it out last time you should check it out again. :B). I believe that said folder now contains the majority of Ladd/Claire art available on the internet, but if anyone knows of any I've missed, send them my way~!

(I love Ladd/Claire so much btw. whoops I guess somehow I acquired a new OTP)

Day 09: Favourite friendship. (WARNING: more images) )

And, uh, something less good. I was checking up on Hourou Musuko/Wandering Son on Amazon (volume 1 comes out next month, hopefully!) and noticed this charming sentence in the description of volume 2:
The “woman” who showed so much interest in Yoshino (when she was wearing a boy’s school uniform) in volume one reappears with “her” boyfriend, and becomes a mentor and friend to the two children.

...Um. I know people can get kind of fluid with the pronouns for the kids, so I'll let the "she" for Takatsuki go, but... I'm pretty sure the series has very clearly established Yuki-san's gender identity. There is absolutely no need for the scare quotes around "woman" and "her". That's kind of disgusting. Does anyone know who one would complain to about something like this? Should I just post in the product discussion forum? D:<

I hope there is enough stuff to do afterward to keep me occupied for a while. As for the story, I don't want to spoil anything, but I did end up getting attached to N. He's not such a bad kid, all things considered. And no, I'm not just saying that because of how much I like the Black/White/N threesome. Ash/Iris/Cilan is better anyway.

My life otherwise is exceedingly uninteresting lately. Found out today I had an ear infection, which is about as exciting as it's been. No luck in the job search so far, though admittedly I haven't found very many places I can apply to. Otherwise, I've mostly just been reading TV Tropes and playing Pokémon for the past few days. Haven't even been checking tumblr. That's when you know things are boring.

I have, however, become quite obsessed with fanmixes recently. At some point it hit me that I can download the darn things, since I don't have to be afraid of downloading things from the internet anymore. And so I have been. A few to recommend, if I may:
Names - Homestuck, Dave/John (companion to the beautiful fic You Are Dave Strider and the sequel thereto)
Our Summer Skin - Hetalia, Spain/Belgium (very soft and summery and pretty and oh look also it is one of my hetalia otps)
Don't Be Afraid - Baccano, Jacuzzi Splot (jacccccuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzziiiii)

And I'll be lucky if I finish this meme before this month's out. :|

Day 08: Favourite couple. (WARNING: image-heavy) )

[livejournal.com profile] theditz, keep an eye out - I found some more Ladd/Claire where I found some of these, and shall be updating my folder soon.

Oh right, also a thing I did was I had an anniversary on Monday. That was pretty cool I guess. ♥
vethica: (Default)
So apparently in the Baccano! DS game you can make two of the dudes get married. Two dudes who are both psycho killers and also enemies. In 1930s America. And it's adorable. Here's the scene (WARNING: spoilers) and accompanying screenshot. Ffffff. And now I ship it.

Also I finished Baccano! yesterday (with [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom). Um. It's pretty amazing. The characters (so many characters). The train fights. The masterfully interlocking storylines. The heartwarming (yes, there is, actually, buckets of it.) The dub. Y'all definitely ought to watch it, if you haven't already. A few people to squee with wouldn't go amiss. :D

More miscellaneous/spoilery thoughts below. )

Anyway that is my excuse as to why I did not do the Digimon meme yesterday. Luckily, the next two days kind of go together, so I will do them as a unit.

Day 06: A couple you wish existed. )

Day 07: A couple you can’t stand. )
vethica: (Default)
Ughh, I'm sorry for being dead to LJ for the past week. It's true what they say about Tumblr being a timesuck. It's all true. ;_; It's nice to have a way to kill a few hours, but that becomes a few hours every day and you have this need to go through your entire dashboard or else you'll feel like you missed something forever. I hope I can find a way to cut back, because I'd really enjoy not feeling like I wasted my entire day every day. ;___;

(Any tips to that end, btw?)

On the bright side, it is an excellent way to find fanart of obscure fandoms/characters/pairings you like. Just stick the name of a series in the search bar for example and oh god look at all the Prétear stuff they have. I would be so tempted to rewatch it if I didn't have enough things to watch already (that I'm never going to get to ;_;).

Speaking of. So I've started watching Baccano! recently, first with [livejournal.com profile] hoyvinglavin64 and then with [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom. You know what everyone says about it being a great show with an amazing dub? Yeah, that's true too. The New York accents. ♥ And oh my god, the characters. Basically, I am in love with Isaac and Miria. I want to be Isaac and Miria when I grow up. (Yes both of them shut up.) I do not know if it is possible to have a crush on a relationship, but every time they're onscreen I find myself squeeing just as hard as I would if it were some dude I was into in something else. So. :|a Also Jacuzzi Splot is my spirit animal.

Ughh I have been neglecting the meme too I am so sorry. I would feel bad shoving seven questions into one day, though; it worked for the song meme, but not so much for this, I think. So I'm just going to say I shoved it a week back, and hopefully I'll be able to catch up more daily in the future.
