100 Things #8: Baccano!

100 of My Fandoms
8. Baccano!

Oh man. Baccano!. I don't even know what I can say about Baccano!. It's the best show I've seen in the past year, and also potentially the best show ever. I have HG to thank for winning buying with money the complete series and getting me to start watching it in the first place, and [livejournal.com profile] ocelotofdoom for getting me to continue. I will always have fond memories of watching it with her and a bunch of people last summer while eating M&Ms. ♥ Now, what I knew about Baccano! before I watched it was the following:

- trains
- killing people
- takes place in US
- someone named Claire but it is a dude
- highly acclaimed dub
- Jacuzzi Splot

And what I knew about Baccano! after I watched it was the following:

- akajkbvhbkvbkbksvhvskhbvadkhb

It was all of those things and so much more. I think I've done a fair bit of squeeing over what I love about it in past journal posts, but to recap: mafias, immortals, train fights, amazing characters, time-jumping storylines that against all logic manage to tie together perfectly (I was rewatching the first episode a few weeks ago and realizes that it actually gives away every single plot point in the show, without somehow spoiling anything. Now that's talent). And then you overlay all that with the best dub I have ever seen (well, heard). Those New York accents. That period-appropriate slang. Mmm. ♥ (Also I am pretty sure Baccano! gave me, like, a fetish for the '20s-'30s and jazz. Except... not sexual. DON'T JUDGE ME) Also did I mention the characters? If you have learned anything from my posts so far it is that I am a huge sucker for stories with loads and loads of characters, and when you have a story like Baccano! where everyone is the main character... well, that's just not fair. ;_;

You wouldn't think it from the hugely positive reception it's gotten over here, but Baccano! actually bombed in Japan. Too American for them, I guess. (may I take this moment to point out that Ryohgo Narita is a huge Ameriboo okay yes carry on.) Which unfortunately means that there are about six pieces of merchandise for it, no doujinshis whatsoever, and very, very little chance of a continuation. Which is a darn shame, because the light novels are still going (with some incomplete but amazing translations over at AnonSpore's blog, and it would be so cooool to see some of that stuff animated. (Then again, I've heard things like Graham gets a girlfriend in the extended canon somewhere. So maybe that would be less cool. Graham needs his gayness to survive. :|) But the English-speaking fandom makes up for a lot of that by still being surprisingly active, even after like 5 years. There is a giant active fandom on tumblr and even semi-regular posts in [livejournal.com profile] baccano here on LJ. So that makes me happy. c:

THE BOTTOM LINE IS I REALLY LOVE BACCANO! OKAY. @_@

Favorite character: How am I supposed to choose just one? D: Okay, okay, fine: Isaac and Miria. Oh wait they are technically two characters whoops. Well. They're two halves of a whole idiot. :B

OTP: Ladd/Claire! They're psycho killers who are also enemies who then suddenly fall in love while fighting on a train and get married in America in the '30s and it's adorable and also (one version of) canon, come on how could it not be. ♥ Others include Isaac/Miria, Jacuzzi/Nice, Ladd/Graham, Ladd/Graham/Claire, and Elmer/Huey, as well as various Dallas pairings (see below).

Headcanons: Dallas is a homewrecker. He gets with everyone else's girls. He will probably get with yours too because he's Dallas Genoard and he does what he wants. Seriously I do ship Dallas/every girl who is already in a happy relationship, especially Dallas/Ennis and Dallas/Nice. Also, Isaac and Miria are married, and Lua, Czes and Graham are all Jewish, with varying degrees of observance. For sexuality headcanons, I refer you to this tumblr post. c:

Recommended fanworks: Unfortunately there is precious little fic out there (though Happy Wedding by [livejournal.com profile] nin_tendo is excellent and fantastically in-character), but as for fanarts, might I direct you to my Ladd/Claire folder, which I believe encompasses the majority of Ladd/Claire art on the internet?(I may have a problem) Not to mention the adorable adorable picture that [livejournal.com profile] soltian made me for a keychain :D :D :D

Slight correction: I didn't win it, I bought it. I won Black Lagoon that weekend (have you watched that show? I know you liked the AMV at AB).

Oh whoops, I must have gotten the two mixed up. I knew you won something that started with B okay. @_@ Also no I have not watched Black Lagoon past the first two episodes, but I really need to. I think I would greatly enjoy it.

Also, Isaac and Miria are married, and Lua, Czes and Graham are all Jewish, with varying degrees of observance.

Elaborate? Admitidly, I don't see Isaac and Miria as "married" in the ceremony and paperwork sense, but I+M together for lyfe.

Oh no, there is no way Isaac and Miria had anything like a normal ceremony. Maybe it was something as simple as they were robbing a casino in Vegas and
HEY ISAAC
NAN DAI MIRIA
THAT SIGN SAYS WEDDINGS IN 15 MINUTES
WELL I'D SAY WE HAVE 15 MINUTES TO SPARE LET'S CHECK IT OUT
(isaac and miria talk in all caps in my head). Or maybe it was some other weird thing that happened that I do not have the imagination to imagine of. But they are so married in my mind okay. :( Also I am in love with the idea that they stole each other's last names.

Lessee. Czes was raised Jewish, but after everything the poor kid's been through he doesn't believe in a damn thing anymore. Graham being Graham, his observance level fluctuates depending on his mood; one day he's making a heated speech arguing against the existence of any kind of higher power and the next he's dragging his whole gang to shul. Lua is pretty observant, but not very vocal about it (it is funny because Lua is never vocal about anything). She really likes Yom Kippur.
