100 Things #1: 1776
100 of My Fandoms
1. 1776
I didn't give much more thought to it until we were at a family friend's house for Thanksgiving (I don't even remember if it was the same year or not), and, noticing she possessed the play's script book, I set about reading it. I was captivated. The lyrics! The dialogue whose every line was either quoted or quotable, and frequently both! The mere fact that almost everything was based on pure historical events, to the point where they actually had to change one of Adams' lines about slavery causing trouble "a hundred years hence" (a direct quote) because people would think it was too on-the-nose! And this was all without even having seen the movie yet.
I can't remember when or even under what circumstances I first did see the movie, though you'd think I would. I'm tentatively guessing I got the DVD from the library at some point. Whichever way it was, though, the movie has now become my dad's and my traditional 4th of July viewing material, in addition to sporadic viewings whenever a new friend and I discover our mutual affection for it. Come to think of it, because of this, 1776 is probably one of the movies that I've seen the most times in my life. :|a It's at least in the top 15. Sadly, I have never seen the play actually performed, though I would really, really like to.
Also, in my AP History class, after we took the exam we just watched historical movies in class, and I suggested we watch 1776, and the teacher said no, she didn't do musicals. I'm still bitter. :|
Favorite character: I hadn't really considered this before, but probably Adams. I can empathize with the dude's problems and I like his way with words. That or Lee, because, well, Lee.
OTP: Adams/Jefferson, mainly because, well, they're pretty canon. See Exhibit A. Although to be entirely fair their relationships with their wives are probably slightly more canon and I am quite fond of Adams/Abigail. Other things I ship include Adams/Franklin, Adams/Lee, and Rutledge/Lee, mainly because of things that will only make sense to me because I thought of them once and then it turned out I shipped it. (Though Adams totally does ask Franklin out in the scene after they meet Martha. He totally does.)
Recommended fanworks: Two absolutely excellent and very funny fanfics, The Very Unfortunate Mr Lee and She Is Your Wife, Isn't She?, both by Historybuff.
