100 Things #3: Ace Attorney

100 of My Fandoms
3. Ace Attorney

Oh, Ace Attorney. Who would have thought a game about practicing law would have gotten so popular? Of course, to be fair, not everyone practices law with quite so much flair as Phoenix & co.

I'm pretty sure I got into Ace Attorney around sophomore year of high school, and my LJ posts seem to back this up. I'd heard about it on the internet, as you do, but I didn't get around to playing it until April-ish, when, for reasons foggy to me, I asked my parents to buy me the first game. O.A. got into it about that time as well, and it is for this reason that I will always associate the first game (particularly 1-5) with her and our driver's ed class. Not... that either of us ever actually learned to drive. Maybe we would have if we didn't spend so much time playing Phoenix Wright, but on the whole I think that was the more valuable endeavor. And, okay, confession time: I've never actually owned any of the other games. I have, however, watched over my friends' shoulders while they played so often that I think it counts as playing them myself, and the internet's filled in the gaps on the rest. :B

Ace Attorney has been one of my most intensely social fandoms. Not on the internet so much, but IRL, definitely. Pretty much all my friends have played at least one game, even HG and Usa-chan, who don't have DSes, thanks to the Wii and the iPhone. And pretty much all of them have some kind of feels about it, so it was just great to talk about plot stuff with them and squee over characters and everything. I guess this post is going to have a lot of high school nostalgefest in it whoops @_@

Also, re the games themselves, they have some of the most superb localizations I've ever seen. I have no idea how they keep coming up with consistently high-quality punny names and meme references that are actually funny and not forced, but however they do it, it's brilliant. (I continue to be in awe of "Jacques Portsman", not to mention "Dick Gumshoe".) Heck, forget the memes - there is a whole lot of original funny in these games. Except when they're being serious, of course, but it turns out they are pretty good at doing that too! (Except for "The miracle never happen." Pffft.)

Also I'm just going to put it out there: I don't like what they did to Phoenix's character in Apollo Justice. I will accept your rotten tomatoes now pls.

OTP: This one is actually a tie between Phoenix/Edgeworth, which is basically canon (seriously. I'm honestly convinced they're written as being romantically interested in each other. "Unnecessary feelings", come on now.), and Maya/Apollo, who have never met. But come on, they're the same age and it would be adorable. Just think of how much she'd fluster him. Fff. Okay also I ship Edgeworth/Gumshoe and Phoenix/Edgeworth/Gumshoe. And Apollo/Machi and Apollo/Klavier. And Mia/Lana. And Edgeworth/Portsman under specific circumstances. And and and. I pretty much ship 90% of things in this fandom okay.

Hottest guy: Jake Marshall, hands down. Unf, unf, unf. The only other one I really find hot is Lance Amano, because I have weird taste. I blame dat dramatic wind.

Recommended fanworks: Turnabout Musical. All of it. I highly recommend that you download the highlights CD (it's free!) and give it a listen. Or if you don't want to download things, here are a couple of my favorite songs on YouTube: It's Gotta Be The Butz and The Samurai Always Wins. The kink meme (all billion parts of it) is also worth a look - I've read some really great stuff in there, and this was back when I couldn't even read porn yet, so fluff and gen fans won't go hungry either. c:
