So this thread over on [livejournal.com profile] ffrantsanon is making me feel really guilty about referring to Grell as a guy.

I think for me it probably boils down to that I am biased and like thinking of him (her?) as a guy better and also I am used to it. But I'm not sure why everyone else in the fandom does it. Like, is there a good reason we're not calling Grell by female pronouns? :\ *so conflicted*

Haha... I'm pretty sure most people think I, as the player, am confused about Grell's sex since at [livejournal.com profile] a_facility my Madara refers to Grell with female pronouns. I've stopped doing it in prose logs because even Grell's player doesn't use them, though if I were playing Grell I would.

I just refer to him as a guy because that's his actual gender? IDK never worried about it that much.

I've only read English translations of the manga there, but all the other characters refer to Grell as male and she was introduced as a guy, so there's some logical basis there. The transgender concept didn't really exist in Victorian England anyway, so Grell is basically Whatever You Want Her To Be.

Don't really mind what pronouns people use, mostly because I'm not sure if Grell is actually supposed to be transgender in canon or just a flaming homosexual so far over the rainbow Oz is just a speck in the distance. I think in the manga the former interpretation was intended, as a complement to Madame Red (a woman in a man's profession, who can't have children, and who had a burning unrequited love for Ciel's father--Sebastian was made to look like Lord Phantomhive). The anime sort of mangled that as far as I know?

Yes, there is. The reason is that Grell is a male and as such, we refer to him using male pronouns, not female ones. It's just what we do in the English language so it is not a bias of yours.

I looked over the thread you linked. It truly appears that those people are insecure and only looking for a reason to be offended because of their own issues.

You are not doing something wrong and have nothing to feel guilty over.

Thank you, but I think the people in the thread have got a point. If someone considers themself one gender, we ought to call them by that gender, right?

I use male pronouns with Grell for the sake of people who aren't familiar with him or the series. He's biologically male, but if I use female pronouns people would assume biologically female.

When writing from his perspective I use female pronouns.

Yes, I am this far behind on my flist.

I think people are just confused. The anime doesn't take Grell's identification very seriously and everyone calls her a guy anyway, so I guess people don't get it. (I didn't know we had Word of God on Grell being trans, although according to the thread you linked it was in some character guide thingy.)

You don't need to feel guilty, but using female pronouns for our favorite chainsaw-wielding fail!butler might be easier to get used to than you think. (Don't we always joke about being lesbians anyway?)

Also, this isn't quite relevant, but have an article about gender-neutral pronouns 'cause it's cool.

I know it probably wouldn't be that big of a step. But like I said, I'm being selfish. You know how guys that look like girls are hotter than girls that look like girls? It's like that. x_x

I was really big into gender-neutral pronouns a few years ago but they just got too confusing. :P So now I just use the singular "they". It has the added bonus of annoying people who think people should not use the singular "they". :D
