(no subject)

I continue to be caught up with most of my responsibilities. It is a ridiculous feeling. I am taking this chance while I still have some homework for tomorrow to procrastinate and LJ post. Can't let myself get too complacent.

So now I will talk about a topic very near and dear to my heart: gym leader names. As many of you know, the English names of the Gen V gym leaders (and a couple other characters) were recently released and confirmed by several reputable sources. Although Bulbapedia, the be all and end all, has not yet confirmed them, they're looking pretty official. Personally, I have mixed feelings, but mainly negative ones, which I will elaborate upon in this very journal!

Dent, Pod, Corn/Cilan, Chili, Cress:
I love these names so much. They're a triple pun - plants (Japanese theme (dent and pod are types of corn)), foods (waiter theme), and type references (gym leader theme). All while being five letters long and starting with C. Definitely my favorite English names of the generation (so far). Too bad the rest didn't all live up to them.
Aloe/Lenora:
She looked like an Aloe, but she looks like a Lenora too. I like how the pun on "normal" doesn't smack you in the face. I'm okay with this one.
Arti/Burgh:
This is where they start getting eurgh (rhymes with Burgh). Okay, I get that "Arti" didn't fit the bug theme (though it fit the artist theme and was cute), but come on, I don't think Burgh is even a name. Seriously, are bug puns so difficult to come up with that all you could give us were Bugsy and Burgh? :|||
Kamitsure/Elesa:
Let's take the first few letters of "electric", slap on a girly suffix and call it a day! :D ...Nope, still not a name. I'm not sure how you even pronounce that. Admittedly, I'm a little biased because I was rooting for "Joules", but seriously, does she look like an Elesa to you?
Yacon/Clay:
This one I'm fond of. It's a cowboy name and a Ground-type name! Even better than "Cliff", which I'd seen someone suggest. I approve.
Fuuro/Skyla:
Come on. This one is just lazy. Might as well have just called her Birdy and had done with it; they look enough alike anyway.
Hachiku/Brycen:
Okay, I think I'm in the minority here, but I like this one. He looks enough like a Brycen, and I don't think it's all that close to Pryce's name. I do agree that it's somewhat out of place with his very Japanese/ninja style, though.
Shaga/Drayden:
The more I look at this one, the less I like it. I think it's that it strikes me as too "trendy" a name for an old guy like that. Plus his Japanese name meant "iris", which I thought was nice. Drayden doesn't even sound that much like dragon. :\
Iris/Iris:
No change here, which I'm fine with. Don't fix what ain't broke. Wish some of the others would have adhered to this.

And, as a bonus.

Touya/Blair:
I can buy this. It's gender-neutral enough for his poofy girly hair. :P Not sure what exactly was wrong with "Blake", but whatever.
Touko/Whitlea:
Not. A. Name. And not tomboyish enough (though that's personal preference). Besides, the characters' names haven't been color puns since Kris - why start now? :|
Geechisu/Ghetsis:
No.

In conclusion, stupid new translation company.

Speaking of Pokémon, I'm almost done with the requests from last post. Sure were a lot of Electric Pokémon. :B Requests are still open if anyone wants one! Just putting that out there.

Okay now I will do homework. Or eat, or something.

Ughh dub names. :(

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. :( At least some of them are good?

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-02-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I think Elesa might be a variant of the name Ellesse. I knew someone named that way back in elementary school.

"Burgh" is awful, though.

Couldn't they have gone with "Skyler" instead of Skyla? Isn't that a unisex name? Or am I wrong and it's a male name?

I also think I like Blake better than Blair, but that's just me.

I'm not liking the new translation company much because of the names they've given some of the new pokemon. I was really hoping that Smugleaf and Wotter would become the actual names. Smuglord would have been cool too.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh okay, I hadn't heard of that name. 1/3 "not a name" complaints retracted! (Any help on the pronunciation front?)

I think Skyler is technically a unisex name, though I've mostly seen it used for guys. I would have definitely preferred it to Skyla, though. Maybe they didn't want people to confuse her with Schuyler from the third movie, but they had no business naming Bel "Bianca" then. :P

Ugh, yes, the Pokémon. I didn't think Smugleaf and Wotter had a chance of becoming canon, mainly because they were fan names and also "Wotter" would sound exactly like "water" when spoken. Absolutely hate a lot of the names they went with, though. Gurdurr? Throh and Sawk? Foongus and Amoonguss? Really?

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
UGH the Pokemon names. I just looked through them and AUGH. I don't think they care about names sounding like other words when spoken though.

Yeah, Ellesse isn't a very common name. Most people know it as an Italian sports brand. But as for pronunciation, my friend always pronounced "Ellesse" as "eh-lees", but looking it up has it reading the same as "Alessa" as well. So I'd imagine pronouncing it similar to "Alessa" probably wouldn't be too far off.

Burgh sounds like a noise you make when you barf. JS. And Drayden... sounds like Jayden and I agree with the whole "too trendy for an old guy" thing. Bah.

What, no Elite 4? :P

Blair what the actual fuck. I'm playing the guy and I'm naming myself Black, aw yeah. Whitlea... just, no. AND WTF GEECHISU NOOOOOOO. I hadn't actually seen that one and I think a part of my soul just died.

How... how do you pronounce Ghetsis? :|a

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
That is the best description of Burgh. 100% accurate. And yeah, Aiden, Jayden, Drayden: good for kids, good for teenagers, not so much good for old men with awesome beards. :|

The Elite 4's English names haven't been released yet, afaik. I'm not really looking forward to them either. =_=;;

Ughhh yes. I have no idea how to pronounce Ghetsis. I guess it is GET-sis? If they were going for a romanization of Geechisu they kind of failed. :|

[identity profile] fujicori.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
... they could have just called Whitlea "Whitney" and it would have made so much more sense. It would actually be a name, for starters. And Burgh? I think of the noises people make while lumbering around not-awake-yet.

The first three are really good, though, and Lenora isn't bad either! (I think Elesa could be a different/electric-themed spelling of Alisa, but it's not a common enough name for that to make much sense.)

First I've heard of a new translation company. I'm a bit out of the loop.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Whitney would have been such a better name. ;_; The only problem is there is a Whitney already and it would get confusing. Also I love your description of "Burgh" as well. I have to start collecting these.

Yess I am a little bit in love with the first three. And they were released first so I was excited for the rest and then it was like NOPE. :| You are probably right about the Elesa thing though. I have moved it to the "name" column.

Yeah, I didn't know about that until recently either. Turns out Nob Ogasawara, the guy who translated all the games up through Platinum, was replaced for HG/SS by TPCi, the company that dubs the anime. Mainly they drew criticism there for changing the old man outside Celadon Gym's line from "This gym is great! It's full of women!" to "...full of strong trainers!" Yeah. I've seen concern expressed over how they'll handle the ferris wheel dialogues and something about Cynthia's bathing suit. :\

[identity profile] fujicori.livejournal.com 2011-02-08 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah... that one gym leader who I've been not trying to beat for the past year thanks to my addiction to playing Voltorb Flip. I CAN SMART REALLY. (I swear my roommate makes that noise at me on a regular basis, though.)

I don't know anything about Black/White aside from Pokemon and gym leader names and designs, but... :|. There's a difference between age-appropriateness and overdoing it.

[identity profile] lisacharly.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanna come over tonight? You gots my number. :)

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ughh, sorry man. I think it's too late now. x_x Would next week be okay?

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. Sorry again. I should have remembered.

[identity profile] eatstypos.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Kris was a pun on Crystal though, since the game wasn't based on a color? :|a After that all the games were based off of gems or nature, so the characters names had to change to reflect that? So it makes sense to me that their names are color puns in Black/White. (I really don't like Whitlea though, it is a pretty derp name. Ghetsis is forever my ghetto sister now. Wtf.)

Oh, Pokemon Green. Why you do this.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm? I think that's what I was saying about Kris, but the characters' names in subsequent games (Brendan, May, Lucas, Dawn, Barry, Lyra, Ethan) weren't puns, just names. So I am confused as to why they started that up again.

Green?

[identity profile] eatstypos.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
:|a I may have misinterpreted that, then. hurrr. Though yeah, I was thinking of Japanese names for SOME REASON, that's what I get for commenting after I just woke up I guess. loool.

Pokemon Green never came to America and it just caused a lot of name-troubles back then :|a So this all made me think about it. And...lj apparently deleted the part of the comment above that I had mentioned that. :| LJ WHAT. I know I wrote up a long Green name rant where did it go.
