the days are beautiful but i feel a bittersweetness
Recap of the past two weeks: saw At Worlds End, got out of school, developed a huge crush on Mackenzie Crook. (Not in that order.) The last one is the one you need to know about for this entry.
Hokay, so I figured since I like Mackenzie so much I ought to watch more stuff he's done, right? So I borrowed The Office (UK, obviously) from the library and I watched it, and of course, Mackenzie's character Gareth was seriously cute. And so when I was thinking about stuff later, I thought it would be neat if Gareth and Ragetti (Mackenzie's Pirates character, don'tchaknow) met. Then I thought it would be even better if they snogged.
The more I thought about it, the more I liked the pairing. It's just adorable. I've drawn it, and even with my lame drawing skills, I think the picture's cute. Only I doubted anyone had written any of it; the UK Office has about zero stories on FF.net, and the comms here are also mainly US Office-based, so a crossover fic seemed unlikely. Then I noticed that
fic_on_demand, which I had always meant to request something from, had opened requests for the month of June. And so I joined and requested me some Gareth/Ragetti, and I thought everything was juuust PEACHY! fine. Except of course for the undeniable fact that the next morning, I saw that someone had commented on it. Was it an author, offering to take me up on my request? No, it was just three words: "Whoa. Brain broken."
Now, when someone says that something has broken their brain, that's usually a bad thing, amirite? So, does that mean my pairing is bad? I imagine the sentiment was due to its selfcesty nature, but a lot of people like twincest, don't they, and I would think this would be less squicky, on account of there's no actual incest involved. But I guess not. And this person had a Mackenzie icon, so that makes me think - they must be a "real" fan, and I'm just a stupid fangirl who just likes pairing people because they're hot. But I don't think I am. I think if their universes did meet, the pairing would be at least somewhat plausible. But maybe I'm just lying to myself. And then I started to think, am I asking for too much? It's
fic_on_demand, for gosh sake, and I was wondering if my request was too demanding.
What's worse, the rules of the community clearly state, "Comments made to the requests should be either writers offering to work on the request, or questions about the request. i don't want to see any commentary on the requester's taste in pairings or the like." So that's breaking a rule there. I could report the person, but it feels a bit too much like tattletaling, and I wouldn't want someone to get in trouble just ebcause they made me feel bad. But the rules continue, "again, the golden rule here is, we're all fans, let's be fans together. feel the love, children..." and the front page follows that up with "no flaming, no guilt, no snark here." Well, guess what. I'm feeling guilty. So, bottom line: I am now feeling insecure about my pairing preferences and I don't know what to do about that.
On the plus side of this obsession,
bsergurl and I found a movie that stars both our interests. Hers is Joseph Fiennes (Ralph's brother), and the movie is The Merchant of Venice (2004 version). We even found a picture that has both of them in it. (MACKENZIE HAS A WEASEL MUSTACHE AND HE MAKES IT LOOK HOT :D) So anyway we're gonna watch it today, although we probably won't be able to hear it for our squeeing. Yeah.
